Policy

It is the policy of Nebraska Urban Indian Medical Center to monitor lab values and keep all lab values strictly confidential.

 Procedure

1.         Abnormal lab values are phoned to NUIMC by the laboratory (i.e. Pathology Medical Services, University of Nebraska – Medical Center, or Quest).

2.         These lab values are taken by a nursing support staff member.

3.         The nursing support staff member pulls the patient’s medical record and documents in the Progress Notes of the abnormal lab values.

4.         The nursing support staff member then gives the patient’s medical record to the provider who ordered the lab on the patient.  If that provider is unavailable, the medical record will then go to the Medical Director.

5.         The provider will decide whether immediate follow-up action will be taken.

6.         At the provider’s discretion, the patient may be phoned by the nursing support staff member to inform them of the abnormal lab values.

7.         The patient’s confidentiality will be maintained at all times.
