   Exam Room Sterilization Policy and Procedure Manual

 

Policy

Nursing support staff and providers at Nebraska Urban Indian Medical Center will adhere to specific procedures when sterilizing exam rooms.

 Procedure

1.       Exam rooms must be cleaned thoroughly after each patient exits the exam room.

 

2.       All used medical supplies such as cotton swabs, needles, and gloves will be disposed of appropriately.

 

3.       All used gowns, cloth towels, and sheets, etc. will be placed in the proper receptacles to be laundered.

 

4.       All laboratory specimens will be placed in the appropriate place in the lab to be sent out for lab services.

 

5.       Exam tables will be wiped thoroughly and covered with new exam table paper.

 

At the end of the working day, nursing staff will perform the following duties:

  1. All equipment, including blood pressure cuffs, thermometers, otoscopes, and tables will be thoroughly disinfected.

 

  1. All supplies such as cotton balls, tongue depressors, paper towels, hand soap, and latex gloves will be stocked.

 

  1. Gowns and other linens will be stocked.

 

  1. Biohazard bags will be emptied daily and disposed of properly.  See Disposal of Contaminated and Infectious Waste Policy and Procedure Manual.
