NUIHC administers an Intertribal Treatment Center for substance abuse. The program delivers culturally relevant in-patient, co-ed substance abuse treatment for Native Americans in the Aberdeen Indian Health Services Area which includes South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa.
The programs goals are to assist clients in admitting they have a treatable disease and to teach them how to implement a course of action that will lead to new-found freedom from the diseases of alcoholism and drug addiction.
A holistic approach that addresses the unique needs of clients during recovery is utilized. While participating in the 45-day closed cycle program, clients are also offered a variety of spiritual and cultural activities to enhance on-going recovery. In addition, clients may participate in the Inipi (Sweat Lodge) and attend cultural and spiritual activities as they are available within the surrounding area.
Admission criteria consists of the following: 18 years or older, enrolled with a federally recognized tribe, and resides in the Aberdeen Area (North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska.) However, clients outside of the Aberdeen Area can still be considered. |
