The mission of this SOMS (Soaring Over Meth and Suicide) project is to raise awareness about Native American suicide rates, establish a core group of community members to guide this project, and create formal and informal community supports for Native American youth and families. |
Nebraska Urban Indian Health Coalition recently received funding for a project that seeks to respond to the disproportionate rates of suicide in the Native American community. The project was funded by the Indian Health Service. The goal of this project is to raise awareness about Native American suicide rates, establish a core group of community formal and informal community supports for Native American youth and families. Anita Wisecup, Project Director, has spent her first weeks with Nebraska Urban Indian Health Coalition interviewing local community leaders. These interviews are providing a foundation for this project.
